Healing and Alzheimer's
A Care Home Study Exploring Well-being, Comfort and Connection in Dementia
Alzheimer’s and later-stage dementia can bring complex challenges—pain, agitation, disrupted sleep, emotional distress, and communication difficulties. For families and professionals alike, these experiences can feel relentless.
Healing and Alzheimer’s documents an exploratory Healing study carried out in a UK residential care home. The study focused on the specific concerns most commonly reported in dementia care and examined whether gentle Healing approaches could reduce distress and support comfort alongside routine practice.
Using recognised outcome measures, participant-reported concerns, and careful observation—and comparing residents who received Healing with those who did not — clear reductions in distress and improvements in wel-lbeing were observed in the Healing group. No comparable change occurred in those receiving routine care alone. Beyond the measured results, carers and practitioners noted moments of calm, emotional expression, relaxation, and renewed connection — including among residents previously considered non-verbal.
This book shares those findings in accessible language and includes practical reflections and recommendations for families and care settings. It offers thoughtful, grounded suggestions for introducing small, gentle practices that may support comfort, communication, and connection alongside the care already in place.
It does not promise cure, and it is not a clinical manual. It is an honest account of what was observed — and what those observations may quietly teach us about presence, dignity, and caring well.
Healing in dementia is not about doing more.
It is about noticing more — and being fully present.
Temporary notice regarding the Kindle edition of Healing and Alzheimer’s: A Care Home Study Exploring Well-being, Comfort and Connection in Dementia
Before publication, I sought confirmation from the publishing platform that the manuscript formatting was correct. I was assured that everything was in order.
After release, a technical formatting issue has been identified in parts of the live Kindle version. This appears to be a platform-side problem, and I am working with their technical team to have it corrected urgently.
The research findings and content remain unchanged, and an updated version will be issued shortly.
Thank you for your patience while this is resolved.
